I was born in Saskatoon, and grew up in Vancouver. I studied philosophy and economics at UBC, and taught philosophy as a graduate student at Simon Fraser University. I was puzzled about how Arthur Erickson's design for SFU worked so well to encourage a strong sense of community that was completely absent from UBC and most other large schools I had visited, and this interest turned into a career in building design and development, which you can learn more about in The Social Developer. I have always been an enthusiastic cyclist, riding long distances to school, and avoiding traffic on my own unoffical "trails," sometimes through many backyards. My interest in mountain bikes came from my need for a durable bike that could tolerate my riding style, and it grew from there.
